It was a case of biting off more than he could chew for a South African python last Friday, after his late supper of a large porcupine proved fatal.

The African rock python, a resident of Lake Eland Game Reserve, had a case of the munchies and made the unwise decision of selecting a porcupine for a midnight feast.

The porcupine in question was not a small morsel but weighed over 10kg according to the manager of the park.

While it is not unusual for a python to eat a porcupine, in this case the selection of the over-sized creature plus the stress from many visitors viewing the feat may have combined to be too much for the snake. Rock pythons are actually known to digest much larger prey, such as antelope.

Social media users pointed out that the snake’s death was a case of karma. “If he had selected a smaller creature for his meal, he would have survived,” wrote a social media user from France. “However, his greed was too much, and he paid the ultimate price.”
