A 62-year old Sydney man could receive a prison sentence after he was allegedly caught filling a lubricant dispenser with hydrochloric acid at a gay and bisexual nightclub in western Sydney.
Police will allege the man filled a dispenser in one of the rooms of Arrows Nightclub, Rydalmere, with hydrochloric acid in a twisted attack on Saturday night.
If the acid had not been detected, it could have caused serious injuries to anyone using the lubricant dispenser. Hydrochloric acid is a strong, corrosive acid which can produce burns, ulcers and scars when put into contact with skin.
However, the venue was soon alerted to the man’s behavior courtesy of an alarm that sounded once he attempted to tamper with the dispenser. According to police, this is not the first time that the lubricant dispensers at the venue have been targeted with this sort of sabotage.
An earlier event prompted management to install alarms that would trigger if any patron attempted to interfere with the dispensers. After the alarm sounded, venue security detained the man until police arrived. No serious injuries were reported when law enforcement arrived.
Contacted by local journalists after the incident, the Arrows Nightclub refused to comment on the matter. The venue bills itself as “Sydney’s gay and bi social club” with “three levels of adult adventure”.
The man was charged with administering a poison with intent to injure or cause distress or pain, entering a building with intent, malicious damage and driving while suspended.
A spokesman for NSW Police said detectives were yet to establish a motive for the attack but there was “no indication of hate motivation to date.” The man was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in the Parramatta Local Court on September 20.
Outside the club on Sunday one club-goer, who chose not be identified, said it was a “sick” thing to do. “There could have been a lot of damage,” the man said. “Hydrochloric acid is not the best sort of thing to be playing with.”
When asked what may have motivated the suspect the man said, “It could be anything really. People are perverted”.
